Sean Walsh, the Co-Founder of 1904labs, talks about his experiences with Covey in the office.
I've made adopting the book optional because it would be anathema to the Covey principles to tell everybody you gotta, you have to adopt these principles.
So it's really kind of like the old, you can lead the horse to the water, so the water in this case, the cultural water here is the Covey book. And you want to lead, in the analogy, would be the team members, the horse, to the water, but you can't make them drink.
So we have the lunch and learns, it's optional to attend, it's just a matter of you know making it available to people and hoping that people pick it up.
You know there's the one habit is a seek first to understand before being understood, and I've told everybody in the company, I think given the way we're a team culture, you know we do all of our project development work in an agile fashion, using human-centered design and it's all team oriented, so I said that's probably going to be the number one habit that you use, both with your teammates and with our clients, but I hope you use all the habits. But if you get nothing else out of reading through the book, if you can understand habit five, seeking first to understand before being understood, things are going to go really well here.
And then I think that'll be kind of the invitation to learn and understand the other habits.
But once again, it is optional, I mean I tell people, it's funny one guy, upon reflection, he goes we were at lunch and, one of the Covey lunches, and he goes yeah I thought it was kind of strange in my first day I get a self-help book. And I go yeah, we didn't really do a great job of explaining why we were giving them books, so we'll fix that, but then he goes, "Now I get it. And I'm really glad that you gave me the book because I've read it, and I'm really starting to understand what it means, you know in terms of the culture of the company."
