The Importance of Culture

Sean Walsh, the Co-Founder of 1904labs, explains why having a good company culture is essential to success.

Transcript

I've been in many different companies in my career, and the reason I'm so focused in on culture, and being intentional about the culture here at 1904labs is in a bad culture, nobody trusts anybody else.

It could be they don't trust each other, the culture could reinforce bad behavior, you get ahead by doing the wrong things, and I've just seen the fact that the wrong people get promoted and the wrong things get done.

Being able to be a Co-Founder here at 1904labs and kinda start from scratch, we focused like a laser on culture to make sure we created a place where people wanna come and people wanna stay. And want to be creative and productive.

Really, who you are as a company is your people and the culture is system in which those people interact with each other, interact with your clients, and so if it's not a good culture, its not a place where people feel they can trust each other, they're not going to do their best work.

How do you do high pressure, complicated work at the same time you have a laid back kind of fun culture? Well, one supports the other. If you didn't have a laid back, people centric, centered culture, it's highly unlikely we could operate at the level of capability that we do and get the work done that we're doing for our clients.

But it's a matter about being intentional with yourself, you know, who am I? What am I trying to do? And it really does make sense that if you can't get yourself under control, how the heck are you going to be a teammate? And work in control with other people.

So at the end of the day, The 7 Habits is all about you know making it a good place to work. Because we treat each other with dignity and respect using the habits and we do good work together. And we do good work and our clients say, "Wow, that's experientially a different place."

You know, the kind of work those people do for us is better and different than what we're getting elsewhere, and that's really the recipe for success.

Take care of the people.

The people take care of the clients.

If we take care of the clients, how can the company not be successful?
